Please Note:  If you are new to hair colour or have not had a hair colour with us in the past 6 months,  you will require a quick skin test to be carried out at a minimum of 48 hours before to your appointment to check for any allergic reactions to the hair colour.

What is Balayage?

The word balayage is comes from the French and translates to "sweeping". It involves adding soft highlights to your hair in a sweeping motion to give it a beautiful natural look.  This free-hand technique allows us to place your highlights exactly where they are needed, achieving a subtler effect than that created with conventional foil highlights as we can avoid creating any hard lines in the colour.  The result is a bespoke look which can be adapted to your individual personality and style.

Balayage hair colour can look fabulous on all shades of hair including blondes, brunettes and even grey hair!  As well as working well with all natural hair colour shades, such as rich brunette or cool blonde tones, balayage is also an excellent way to try out a flash of a bright fashion colour such as an on-trend pastel shade.

The Reverse Balayage & Shadow Root Balayage

Reverse balayage is a low maintenance hair colouring technique which uses darker shade lowlights to infuse depth and dimension into the hair. The results are stunning.

If your blonde balayage has become too bright or brassy, reverse balayage can tone it down and as the colours used are typically closer to your natural shade, it’ll be even less noticeable when your hair grows - meaning you will need less root touch-ups.

Root Shadowing, Root Stretching & Colour Melts

One of the most asked for fashionable hair colour trends in our Paignton hairdressers is colour melt hair. The effect is designed so you can't tell where one colour starts and the other one ends. We can ‘stretch’ or ‘drag’ out your root colour, adding multi-dimensional shades, growing lighter towards the ends of your hair.

To create a natural, lived-in look, a subtle transition between lighter highlights, or a blonde balayage, is 'melted' with the root colour to create softer, less obvious lines of demarcation which you often get from traditional foil highlights.

Colour melt hair can be low maintenance if you opt for natural shades of brown and blonde, however, bright, vivid hair colours that are different to your natural root colour will require more regular top-ups.

The Money Piece

Also known as face frame colour or face framing highlights, the 'money piece' gives a nod to the chunky highlights seen in the ’90s with bold strips of colour being added as a contrasting shade to the rest of the head.

Balayage At David Youll Hair Salon – FAQ’s

What’s The Difference Between Balayage and Ombré?

«

Ombré (another French word which means 'to shadow') produces a more contrasting two-tone effect, usually by creating hair colour that is darker at the roots and lighter at the ends of the hair.  In contrast, balayage gives a more multi-dimensional result with hair colours hand-painted in vertical sections as if to simulate where the sun might catch the light on your hair.

There are many ways your David Youll stylist can use balayage hair colour including colour blending, root stretching, colour melt and free-hand highlights.  If you’ve seen a hair look you love, bring us in an image and we’ll adapt the look for you.

How Long Will It Take To Create Balayage Hair Colour?

«

The length of your amount of time taken will depend on whether you choose a full balayage colour service throughout your hair or if you are adding a few highlights, for example around your face.  Your hair may also require some preparation to achieve the final result you are aiming for.

Book in for a complimentary colour consultation and we will assess your hair and be able to advise you on how long it will take to create the look you desire.
